FOWB AGM 2024

FOWB Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 24 September 2024 at 7pm at Willunga Hub, corner High Street and St Peters Tce, Willunga 5173

Come and hear, Tom Gara, member of the Friends of Willunga Basin Committee, talk about the ‘Sellicks Beach pebble bank; its geological history & mining leases’

Tom will discuss the formation of the pebble bank after the sea-level rise at the end of the Pleistocene period about 11,000 years ago, and the mining of the pebble bank which took place in the early decades of the 20th century. During that period, many thousands of tons of pebbles were taken from the beach and shipped to Broken Hill, Moonta, Wallaroo and other smelting plants in Australia.

Tom Gara, is an historian, involved in archaeological surveys on the southern Fleurieu since the 1980s, worked with Kaurna people on a range of historical research and heritage projects and since the 1990s, specialised in native title research, first for the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement and then for the SA Crown Solicitor’s Office. He has published several papers about Kaurna history and is an Honorary Research Associate at the South Australian Museum.Thank you to the many who have recently renewed their membership and are now eligible to stand for, or vote for election for the FOWB Committee.
